“Emptiness is intimacy with all life. Emptiness holds space for everything.” Sophia Faria

I used to think that emptiness was the opposite of intimacy. Almost like emptiness equals apathy.

It’s taken many years to explore the topic of intimacy and what it means, and while I don’t claim to be an expert, in reading these words the other day, I felt the truth of them deep in my bones. Chills of yes! rushed through me.

All of the pushing and pulling, pleasing and disappointing, ecstasy and heartbreak, confusion and breakthroughs along the way have slowly and surely emptied me out for intimacy to enter.

You may wonder what got emptied out and how do you love in emptiness. I wondered that too.

I believe it’s some thing that you can’t intellectualize, you simply have to feel and know.

What gets emptied out is all of the our standards, ideals, fear of rejection, sense of worth, and inherited beliefs about what intimacy, love and relationships are supposed to look like.

What’s left is an open vessel, one that is eternal, free of the past and the future, and receptive to the present.

What’s left is the possibility of a true encounter with the soul of another, and the divine oneness that you share.

What’s required is for you to put down all the baggage from the past about who this person is, all of the conditioned responses and protective mechanisms that you’ve developed to pad your ego from rejection, and allow yourself to be reborn through the encounter, if only for a moment, before it, too, dies again.

This is what intimacy means to me - to die before you die, and let others do the same. To give up having to be right or safe or wrong and rejected. To offer a new path forward for all involved, without attachment.

So the next time you meet someone who you’ve met many times before, notice all the ways that you have come to expect them to be act and connect in a certain way, notice how you have decided who they are already.

And then look again - look with eyes that you long to be seen with, as an ever-expanding, ever-learning, ever-ripening possibility of love.

In the act of doing so, you get to become someone entirely new in the world, an empty vessel for love.
